# Are YouTube subscriptions free? — SubSense

Last reviewed: October 8, 2026. HTML version: https://www.subsenseapp.com/answers/are-youtube-subscriptions-free/

**Subscribing to a channel is free. Two other things YouTube sells are paid, and people call all three “subscriptions”.** The button under a video asks you to sign in and tap **Subscribe**, and YouTube's steps for it include no payment of any kind (*YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels*, read 8 October 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4489286?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid). The paid ones are channel memberships, which you join one channel at a time, and YouTube Premium, which covers YouTube as a whole. Which of the three someone means decides the answer.

## Subscribing to a channel costs nothing

YouTube describes a subscription as a way to follow a creator: “You can subscribe to channels you like to see more content from those channels,” and “Once you subscribe to a channel, any new videos it publishes will show up in your Subscriptions feed” (*YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels*, read 8 October 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4489286?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid). The steps on that page are short: open the app or m.youtube.com, sign in, and tap **Subscribe** below the video. Nothing on the page asks for a card or names a price.

What you get is a feed entry and some alerts. The same page says that by default “we'll only send you the highlights from the channel,” and that tapping the bell switches you to every notification. You do not need to subscribe to watch: “You can always view a channel's content before subscribing,” which is the subject of [our page on watching without subscribing](https://www.subsenseapp.com/answers/watch-youtube-without-subscribing/).

YouTube's own Premium FAQ uses the plain words for the ordinary service. A viewer who does not pay, it says, will “continue to experience the same free of charge YouTube (with ads) as they do today” (*YouTube Help: Your content & YouTube Premium*, read 8 October 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6306276?hl=en).

## Channel memberships are paid, per channel

This is the one that sits next to the Subscribe button and gets mistaken for it. YouTube: “Channel memberships let you join a Creator's channel membership program through monthly payments,” with perks that “may include badges, emoji, posts, content, and more” (*YouTube Help: Join, change, or cancel a membership*, read 8 October 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6304294?hl=en). The button is labelled **Join**, and it only appears where the creator has turned memberships on.

A few conditions from that page:

- You must be at least 18 (19 in Korea and Algeria) and agree to YouTube's Paid Terms of Service.
- “Channel memberships may be priced differently depending on your country or region, and the platform you use to sign up.”
- Leaving part-way through a month gets no refund for the rest of it, and “Your member status and channel name may be publicly visible or shared with third parties.”

YouTube's page on channel pages lists subscribing and becoming a member as two separate things you can do from a channel's Home tab (*YouTube Help: Find your way around YouTube channel pages*, read 8 October 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/11997749?hl=en). Neither that page nor the memberships page says that unsubscribing ends a membership. Cancelling has its own route: go to youtube.com/paid_memberships, find the channel, then **Manage membership** and **Cancel** (*YouTube Help: Join, change, or cancel a membership*, read 8 October 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6304294?hl=en).

## YouTube Premium is paid, for all of YouTube

Premium is not tied to any channel. YouTube calls it “a paid membership that gives viewers an amplified video and music experience across YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids,” and lists what members get: “watching YouTube ad-free,” downloading “videos to watch offline on mobile,” and playing “videos in the background” (*YouTube Help: Your content & YouTube Premium*, read 8 October 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6306276?hl=en). It also says Premium “is available in several countries/regions”, not everywhere.

That page names no price, and we do not quote one. YouTube's own sign-up page, [youtube.com/premium](https://www.youtube.com/premium), is where to look for yours.

## Telling the three apart

*Our rule of thumb, not YouTube's:* if YouTube takes money from you every month, you are paying for a membership or for Premium. Your channel subscriptions are a list, and the list has no bill attached. To read that list in full, see [all the channels you follow](https://www.subsenseapp.com/answers/see-all-youtube-subscriptions/); to stop paying a creator, use the cancel route above rather than the Unsubscribe button.

[SubSense](https://www.subsenseapp.com/), our app, works only with the free kind. Sign in with Google and it organises the channels you follow into smart categories, and lets you unsubscribe from the ones you no longer watch without leaving the app; you approve every removal, and nothing goes automatically. It has no view of memberships, Premium or anything you pay YouTube for, so it cannot show or cancel them. The app has a paid tier of its own: 10 free in-app removals to start, then unlimited with a monthly, yearly or one-time lifetime purchase. The free way never goes away: open any channel in YouTube and unsubscribe yourself, unlimited and never metered. We build SubSense on our own; it is an independent tool, not affiliated with YouTube.
