# How to clean up your YouTube subscriptions — SubSense

**Start by deciding which of two problems you actually have** — because they have different fixes, and mixing them up is how cleanup effort gets wasted.

## Problem 1: your Subscriptions feed is noise

The Subscriptions feed shows recently uploaded videos from channels you follow — YouTube's help pages say exactly that. So if that feed is unusable, the cause is arithmetic: channels that went quiet contribute nothing, and a handful of high-volume channels contribute almost everything. **This is the problem unsubscribing fixes.** Review your channels list at https://www.youtube.com/feed/channels, drop the dead and the flooders, and the feed becomes yours again. YouTube itself recommends staying under 5,000 subscriptions *"to make sure the subscriptions feed and channel list give the best experience"* — its own admission that an overgrown list degrades the product.

## Problem 2: your Home recommendations are wrong

**Unsubscribing mostly won't fix this one, and it's better to know now.** YouTube's help page on recommendations says they're based on videos you've *liked*, your *watch history*, your *search history*, and activity on your Google Account — and the controls it offers are **"Not interested"**, **"Don't recommend channel"**, and pausing or clearing your watch and search history. Subscriptions aren't on that list. If Home keeps serving a topic you're done with, those history controls — not your subscription list — are the lever.

## The review is the real work

For problem 1, the channels list gives you names but no context: not who last uploaded in 2023, not who posts six times a day. Finding that out manually means opening hundreds of channels one by one — which is why most cleanups stall after twenty.
