What is a good PocketTube alternative for YouTube subscriptions?

Last reviewed: October 1, 2026 · Markdown version

It depends on whether you want to keep every channel and see them in groups, or follow fewer channels. For the first, PocketTube is hard to beat, because its groups appear inside YouTube's own pages in the browser. For the second, a tool built around reviewing and removing channels on your phone suits you better. SubSense, the second kind, is ours; the section on it says where it falls short.

What PocketTube does well

PocketTube's Chrome Web Store listing describes groups and sub-groups of channels, with "One subscription/channel can have a few collections", custom icons, and a feed of the latest videos per group with an "auto-generated playlist on YouTube" to play a whole group. It filters and sorts videos "by duration, activity, and date", can hide Shorts or watched videos, and offers "Health status for your subscriptions and bulk unsubscribing channels without activity". Your setup syncs "on Android, iOS or other browsers using Google Drive or your Chrome profile" (PocketTube: Youtube Subscription Manager, Chrome Web Store, read 1 October 2026).

On a phone, the Play listing pitches the same grouping: "Organize YouTube subscriptions into folders with custom icons" and "Filter videos by group" (PocketTube, Google Play listing, read 1 October 2026). Not everything is included without paying: its pricing page lists nested groups, full access to Deck mode and full access to video sorting on the feed among the paid features (PocketTube Pricing, read 1 October 2026).

Where your groups are kept

PocketTube's privacy policy, last updated September 9, 2024, says your collection lists, icons and settings "are transferred and stored securely", using "chrome.storage API and Google Drive API". On Drive it keeps them in the hidden Application Data folder, which "uses the user's Drive storage quota". It also uses Mixpanel to log how the extension is used, and says that "we do not send any identifying information that could be correlated with your account" (Privacy Policy PocketTube, read 1 October 2026).

The same policy describes YouTube API use this way: "We use Youtube API for reading your youtube subscription list. We don't change, update or delete any data." It does not explain how the bulk-unsubscribe feature in the Chrome listing carries out removals, so if that matters to you, ask the developer before relying on it.

SubSense (ours)

SubSense is for the other job: getting the list down to channels you still watch. You sign in with Google, and it sorts the channels you follow into categories; a channel it cannot place goes to Mystery Box, a category of its own rather than a silent failure. It flags channels that have stopped uploading for 60 days and channels that post often enough to flood your feed, and a swipe screen takes you through your feed one channel at a time, keep or let go, with the reason on the card.

Removals are always yours to approve. Before anything is removed you see exactly which channels will go, nothing happens on its own, and Undo subscribes you again and puts the channel back in its category. Inside the app, 10 removals are free to start, and monthly, yearly or lifetime plans make them unlimited; the free way never runs out, because you can open any channel in YouTube and unsubscribe there yourself. SubSense asks for two YouTube permissions on one consent screen, uses no third-party servers, and has no ads, no analytics and no tracking: your data stays on the phone and is exchanged only with Google's own YouTube API. It runs on iPhone and Android, and a demo with sample data needs no sign-in. SubSense is an independent tool, not affiliated with YouTube.

What a PocketTube user will not find in it:

  • No groups in YouTube's own pages. Categories live inside SubSense; YouTube's sidebar and home feed look exactly as before.
  • No browser extension. It is a phone app for iPhone and Android only.
  • No CSV export and no Drive sync. Your categories stay on the phone, and cached YouTube data is cleared after 30 days, YouTube's own limit, so a long break means syncing again.
  • Nothing happens while it is closed. It does not post alerts about new uploads.
  • Big clear-outs can stop for the day. YouTube's daily API quota can halt a long run of removals partway, and you carry on the next day.

Choosing

Keep every channel and browse them by topic on a computer: PocketTube. Cut the list down on your phone, seeing which channels went quiet before you decide: SubSense. You could also use both: one to prune, the other to group what is left.
