Does YouTube unsubscribe you from channels?

The YouTube and Google help pages cited on this page describe no behaviour where YouTube removes a subscription from your list on its own. None of them sets out a rule about inactivity, about a channel you stopped opening, or about periodic clear-outs. Say that carefully, though: it is an absence in the documentation, not a promise. YouTube does not say it does this, and it does not say it never will. What this page can do is set out the documented things that look like it from where you are sitting, and mark plainly where the documentation runs out.

What YouTube does document near this question

YouTube's help page on subscribing says “You can only subscribe to 75 channels per day,” that “In general, you can subscribe to a maximum of 2,000 channels,” and separately recommends “capping your account to 5,000 channel subscriptions to make sure the subscriptions feed and channel list give the best experience” (YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels, read 23 September 2026). The daily cap is the one that matters here. Observation rather than documentation: a subscribe that simply does not take — you tap, and the button goes back — reads exactly like being unsubscribed, and 75 in a day is a documented reason for it. A channel can be removed from YouTube entirely

YouTube's strike policy says “3 strikes in the same 90-day period may result in your channel being permanently removed from YouTube” (YouTube Help: Community Guidelines strike basics on YouTube, read 23 September 2026). Observation rather than documentation: a channel that no longer exists cannot keep appearing in a list of channels, so the name goes. YouTube does not publish what your subscription count does in that moment, and we are not going to guess at it.

An inactive Google Account can be deleted

Google's policy says “An inactive Google Account is an account that has not been used within a 2-year period,” and that “Google reserves the right to delete an inactive Google Account and its activity and data if you are inactive across Google for at least two years” (Google Account Help: Inactive Google Account Policy, read 23 September 2026). That is not YouTube unsubscribing you from a channel; it is an account and its contents going away together.

A third party with access can change your subscriptions

YouTube names this one outright, in the direction of unwanted subscriptions: “If you get notifications for videos and channels that you didn't subscribe to, or content that you unsubscribed from, it might be due to a browser extension subscribing you without your permission” (YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels, read 23 September 2026). The developer documentation shows the same power from the app side: deleting a subscription through YouTube's API requires one of its write scopes, such as youtube.force-ssl (YouTube Data API reference: Subscriptions: delete, read 23 September 2026). So any app you have signed into with Google and granted that kind of permission is able to change what you are subscribed to. You can review linked apps and take access back at myaccount.google.com/linkedapps, Google's own page, where Google's help says “If you remove access, the app can't access your Google Account” (Google Account Help: Manage links between your Google Account & apps from other developers, read 23 September 2026). Are you looking at the right list?

YouTube says “You can manage up to 100 channels from one Google Account,” and “On YouTube, you can only use one channel at a time” (YouTube Help: Switch between channels on a Google Account, read 23 September 2026). In the top right corner of youtube.com, click your profile picture, click Switch account, and check which one you are on. If the list will not appear at all, that is a separate question with its own answer: why can't I see my subscriptions on YouTube?

What is not documented, and is not repeated here

Search this question and you will find confident claims that YouTube unsubscribes viewers who stop watching, that it runs periodic purges of dormant subscribers, or that it drops subscriptions to channels it has demonetised. None of those appear in the help pages cited here. They may be someone's accurate observation and they may be folklore; from the outside the two look identical, and a page that cannot tell them apart should not repeat either. So this page stops where the documentation stops. None of these pages describes a record of your own subscribing and unsubscribing either, which means a count that looks lower than you remember cannot be checked against one — the honest position is often “this cannot be determined”, and that is more useful to know than a confident story.

What you can actually do

Open youtube.com/feed/channels while signed in: it loads a page YouTube titles “All subscriptions”, with a “Most relevant” sort control at the top (checked 23 September 2026). To drop a channel, YouTube's help documents one route, from a video of that channel — “Under the video player, click Subscribed”, then Unsubscribe (YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels (computer), read 23 September 2026).
