Why am I subscribed to YouTube channels I never subscribed to?

YouTube's help pages name exactly one cause, and it is a browser extension. Their words: “If you get notifications for videos and channels that you didn't subscribe to, or content that you unsubscribed from, it might be due to a browser extension subscribing you without your permission” (YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels, read 23 September 2026). That is the only mechanism the pages cited here document for a subscription you did not make. The rest of this page separates the explanations that are really a different question from the ones YouTube does not document at all, and says which is which rather than filling the gap.

1. A browser extension subscribed you

Open your browser's extensions page and remove anything you do not recognise or no longer use, then go back to your channels list at youtube.com/feed/channels and clear out the names that arrived that way. Observation rather than documentation: extensions are browser software, so this explanation fits a list that went strange while you were using YouTube on a computer better than one that went strange on a phone.

2. A subscribe can happen on a page that is not YouTube

Google publishes an embeddable Subscribe button that any site owner can put on their own page. Its developer documentation describes the tool plainly: it “lets you configure an embedded subscription button” and gives you “the code needed to insert that button on your page” (Google for Developers: YouTube Subscribe Button, Configure a Button, read 23 September 2026). So a subscription can begin somewhere else entirely, next to an article or on a creator's own website. Observation rather than documentation: it is still a button someone has to press — which makes this a good explanation for a name you do not remember, and not one for a name you never chose.

3. You may be looking at a different channel

One Google Account can carry more than one YouTube channel, and YouTube is direct about the consequence: “On YouTube, you can only use one channel at a time.” The same help page says “You can manage up to 100 channels from one Google Account” and gives the steps — in the top right corner of youtube.com, click your profile picture, click Switch account, then click the account you want to use (YouTube Help: Switch between channels on a Google Account, read 23 September 2026). That page does not spell out what each channel keeps separately, so the reliable move is to switch and look rather than to reason about it.

4. Something, or someone, has access to the account

Google's help for a compromised account tells you to review your recent security events, check for devices you do not recognise, and review the apps with access to your account (Google Account Help: Secure a hacked or compromised Google Account, read 23 September 2026). Worth knowing alongside them: removing a subscription through YouTube's API needs one of its write scopes (YouTube Data API reference: Subscriptions: delete, read 23 September 2026), so any app you signed into with Google that holds such a permission is able to change your subscriptions — that is what the permission is for. 5. What YouTube does not document

There is no troubleshooting list in the help pages cited here for “a subscription I do not remember making”, and nothing in them says YouTube subscribes you to channels on its own. You will find confident explanations elsewhere — that watching enough of a channel subscribes you, that promotions add channels quietly, that a rename is really a new channel. None of those are in the documentation, so they are not asserted here.

A channel that has since renamed, changed subject or stopped uploading can be genuinely unrecognisable without ever having been added behind your back.

Turning “I don't recognise this” into a list you do

The practical route needs no app. Open youtube.com/feed/channels — YouTube titles it “All subscriptions” (checked 23 September 2026) — and work down it. YouTube's documented unsubscribe route is one channel at a time and its help describes no bulk option, so a list of a few dozen is the size this works for — see how to mass-unsubscribe and how to see all the channels you're subscribed to. Nothing YouTube documents about that list tells you whether an unfamiliar name still earns a slot.
